The Netherlands has been struggling with illegally dumped drugs waste lately. Next to that, there's an area where the 'wild animal' population is getting out of hand. I see a solution here! #drawing #newspaper #volkskrant #nrc #oostvaarderplassen #drugs #waste #struggle #dutch #netherlands #politics #horse #deer #deardrugs # #illustration #drawing #dutchdesign #ontwerp #tekening #schets #nonsolution #amsterdam #ziekenhuis #collapse #crash #capitalism #irony #sketch
two Dutch hospitals went bankrupt as a result of privatization and an economical market focused on growth and profit / MC Slotervaart en de Flevolandse MC IJsselmeerziekenhuizen ten onder aan de marktwerking. An English, soon to be non-European friend of mine (sorry-not-sorry), taught me that calling someone a ‘mug’ was considered to be fairly offensive. It surprised me. I thought of all was those nice ceramic collector’s items that I cherish as a symbol of pure gezelligheid (untranslatable, as you know), warmth and joy; not to mention their job to keep the hot chocolate together. They are incomplete without a cheesy quote and somewhat bad puns printed on them, so you get to read the same joke over and over again every morning. Luckily they also break from time to time. There is a similar word in Dutch, which is ‘muts’ (hat, a knitted one). This piece of practical skull-heat-protector or a fashion statement (not on me; I have a face for sunglasses and hats look weird), is another way of telling someone in a kind way that he or she is being silly. Wikipedia tells me that it’s another word for ‘trut’ (bitch), but I suspect this fluffy thing isn’t considered to be so radically offensive. It can be placed into the same category as ‘pannenkoek’, ‘flapdrol’ and ‘oelewapper’. The Dutch language stands out at calling names in a cute way. When people want to have a real go at offending someone, they fall back on using any annoying or chronic disease. I like to stick to the food, the mugs and the clothing to keep us warm. This is me wearing a 'trut' (only I am a bit older now). #dutch #netherlands #nederlands #design #cheese #muts #mug #dutchwomen #warm #winter #entomology #hat #dutchclass #pancakes #explained #food #brexit #throwback #glitter #harrypotter #fashion #cliche #culture #dutchdesign #graphic #illustration #ddw #dairy #milk
You haven’t visited a country properly if you failed to learn how to offend the locals, so let’s get back to the basics and teach you some hurtful Dutch words. “Oelewapper” signifies something between idiot and fool. Others believe a good synonym to explain the word is slome duikelaar’, which doesn’t really clarify anything because this is a wobbly toy for kids. It is said that “Oele” was a sceptical outcry and “wapper” refers to an old word for ‘slungel’ (English: ‘lank’). Well, that’s the dictionary story, but the fake news theory of its origin is much more interesting (you could also call it a local myth, but ‘fake news’ is very trendy and provocative so for the sake of stirring some emotions here, I’ll use that term instead). It all started at the time when the Netherlands was conquered by the Spanish during the Eighty Year’s war. A few Spanish soldiers that had been going about in the city, saw a Dutch woman and called out: ‘‘Olé guapa!’ (hello, beautiful). This was then changed to “oelewapper” over time. The cliché image of a Dutch woman is a very tall lady carrying cheese around, with a hair color that matches the Gouda. When you ask them how they got so tall, they will tell you that they drank a lot of milk growing up (this was at a time where dairy and gluten wasn’t considered a devilish poison yet). The fact that we now get to offend people by calling them ‘hello beauties’ while thinking of Dutch pretty women, is a pure piece of poetry and therefore much better than the truth. So if you ever happen to be called “oelewapper” (and I hope you do), whip your hair back and forth, smile brightly and tell them: “thank you, I do look pretty good and no, I don’t do gluten and dairy, just XTC and other hard drugs over the weekend!” Afterwards you can show them a picture of a happy cow and start a radical monologue about religious food habits. Option two: walk away proudly and whistle “we are the champions” while thinking of cheese, living up to the old-fashioned cliché of the Dutch.
