3 Reasons You Need to Know Illustrator Isabel Castillo Guijarro
Our rotating mural series features new work from a select artist monthly, displayed on the wall outside Tictail Market, our shop at 90 Orchard Street in NYC. Currently featured: a pop of punchy pink from Isabel Castillo Guijarro of byisabel, an illustrator originally from Madrid and currently based in New York. The image, called Bite My Lip, was specially created for Tictail and is available in the artist’s shop.
In New York this week? Join us at 90 Orchard Street on January 31st for a little shindig to celebrate the new mural. We’ll be there from 6-9pm for a night of music, rosé, and a showcase of select works (all for sale!).
For those unfamiliar with byisabel's art, here are three reasons we love it enough to display it loud and proud on our corner of the Lower East Side.
Her work makes a bold statement—but one that’s open to interpretation. About her mural, Guijarro tells us, “My goal was to make something bold, bright, and provocative, that could convey different feelings depending on who is looking at it. For me, it is a woman biting her lip in a very sensual way. I want to ask others: What's your interpretation?”
She’s made eye-catching color her signature. Inspired by travel, music, and anything with a “wow effect,” Guijarro’s use of color makes her work undeniably unique. Making frequent appearances these days: bubblegum pink, candy apple red, and various shades of fiery fuchsia.
There’s so much more to come. “I started illustrating by chance less than two years ago,” Guijarro says, “so I still feel like a kid—looking up to adults, trying to find my style.” For now, she adds, “My hope is that my mural really brightens up the street. That people will be able to see it from far off, and get excited right away.”
